Back in the golden days of Arcades, the vertical and horizontal shooter genre had its share of different airborne vehicles to fly into combat. Divided into spaceship-oriented ones like the early Xevious and more real warfare titles as Tiger Heli for example represented, most of them resulted in all-too soon empty pockets where an on-screen blinking "Insert Credit" never failed to convince players to start another round. Allowing for perfect ports of Arcade originals definitely is and always has been one of the Dreamcast's main strengths. Under Defeat, now light years beyond the early days of fighting aerial sprite battles, is not only graphically a very ambitious title.
Under Defeat was first introduced into Japanese Arcades in late October of 2005. Renowned shooter specialist G.Rev (of Border Down and Senko no Ronde fame) now souped up a 100% port of the original for Dreamcast, adding a variety of set up options (choose from different display versions) and several modes in the process. There's an arranged BGM mode for instance, as well as a Practice mode, which lets you freely select a stage and where replays can also be saved. These come in handy, as you can watch this canned footage to analyze and improve your skills. Furthermore, a Gallery mode includes artwork, pictures and more. Traditional 2D gameplay meets with fantastic three-dimensional backdrops, ensuring a very realistic feel.
Across all five stages you encounter various sea, ground and air forces. Use the stick to move your copter about and use two face buttons to either shoot a steady stream of bullets (vulcan, cannon or rocket) or drop bombs (where the latter is also known as the "panic button"). Spatial control is where Under Defeat lets come Zero Gunner 2 to mind: hold one button while moving the stick and your heli can now be rotated around the screen, instead of just being vertically oriented. You can choose between a normal or a reversed setting here to change the angle for this. Additionally, when a meter located in the lower left part of your HUD has filled up, you can deploy an optional shooting device, which will fly alongside your machine, aiding in combat. Summed up, Under Defeat brings home an authentic, improved Arcade experience, which will keep you glued to your big screen for more than just a couple of weeks. A future classic, in its own right.
